The brief
A private client wanted two exterior views that felt like holiday photographs rather than CGI, with loungers, a barbecue, planting and people around the pool, and an empty version of each.
Our approach
The base renders were taken through five rounds of feedback in post-production: cloudless blue skies and matching pool colour in both views, people moved out of the water and kept to the pool area, sun rays removed, and the stone on one view colour-matched to the natural, uneven stone of the other. When composite seams were spotted the blending was rebuilt so the joins disappear.
The result
Four final files, the two views each with and without people, were exported in early August 2026.
Holiday photograph, not computer graphics
A private client wanted two exterior views that felt like holiday photographs, with loungers, a barbecue, planting and people around the pool, and an empty version of each. That changes the brief. A technical exterior shows a building accurately; a lifestyle image must also feel like a place where someone has just poured a drink and sat down.
Getting there means thinking like a photographer: where the sun sits, what fills the foreground, and where the eye lands first. Each view was delivered with and without people, which is why four finished files exist. Empty versions suit uses where figures might distract, and populated ones carry the mood.
Stone, water and a low sun
The villa is pale natural stone under a terracotta roof, with shuttered windows, black balcony railings and an arched entrance. A pergola on stone columns shelters an outdoor kitchen, while an infinity-edge pool catches the sky. Terraced retaining walls step down through lavender and clipped shrubs, with olive trees and stone stairs below.
Low, warm sun rakes across the masonry and gives the texture depth. One view runs along the terraces toward the entrance; the other faces the pool and pergola head on. Sky, water colour and shadow direction are matched so both read as the same afternoon.
Five rounds of post-production
The base renders went through five rounds of feedback in post-production. Cloudless blue skies and a matching pool colour were applied to both views, people were moved out of the water and kept to the pool area, sun rays were removed, and the stone in one view was colour-matched to the natural, uneven stone of the other.
When composite seams were spotted, the blending was rebuilt so the joins disappear. Because sun angle, shadow and reflection are controlled in the 3D scene, the retouching can stay subtle. The four final files were exported in early August 2026.
Briefing a lifestyle exterior
Sky and water colour are the two most subjective choices, so agree them early. Decide too whether people appear at all, how many, and what they are doing, since placement is easier to plan than to invent late. Lifestyle work lives on small decisions, such as whether the loungers face the water or the house and whether the barbecue is lit, and a handful of reference photographs settles most of them before the first draft rather than during the fifth round. If the client has a house style for colour grading, send an example, so the empty and populated versions both land on it.
- Two or three reference photographs for sky, light and mood.
- A list of props wanted, from loungers to barbecues, and any to avoid.
- Whether each view is needed with and without people.
- How the images will be used, so the crop and size suit the final page.
Questions
Residential exterior: questions clients ask
Populated views carry lifestyle and scale for brochures and websites, while empty views suit listings or any use where figures might distract. Producing both together keeps them perfectly matched in sky, light and colour grade, so you can swap one for the other on a page without the background appearing to change.
We keep lighting and camera physically plausible, then post-produce sky, water, texture and colour grade with a photographer's judgement. Matching tones between views and rebuilding any composite seams stops the image giving itself away as computer graphics. Reference photographs from you help us judge how warm, how bright and how saturated the finished image should be.
Every project includes up to four revision rounds, assuming mark-ups come back within a day of each draft. Use the early rounds on big choices such as sky and pool colour, and leave the later ones for people and fine texture. Clear references at the start keep it efficient.
